Uganda Visa & Entry Requirements: Everything You Need to Know

A step-by-step guide to Uganda's e-visa, the East Africa Tourist Visa, yellow fever requirements, and what to expect at Entebbe airport.

Do You Need a Visa for Uganda?

Most visitors need a visa to enter Uganda, and the good news is the process is fully online. Uganda uses an e-visa system, so you apply, pay, and receive approval before you fly. Citizens of a few African and Caribbean countries are exempt, but travellers from Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania should plan on applying.

How to Apply for the Uganda e-Visa

Apply through the official Uganda Electronic Visa Application System. Approval usually takes two to five working days, so submit your application at least two weeks before travel. You will need:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
  • A recent passport-size photograph
  • A yellow fever vaccination certificate
  • Your travel itinerary or hotel booking
  • Payment of USD 50 for a single-entry tourist visa

The East Africa Tourist Visa

Planning to combine Uganda with Rwanda and Kenya? The East Africa Tourist Visa costs USD 100, is valid for 90 days, and allows multiple entries across all three countries. Apply through the country you will enter first. It is the best value option for a multi-country safari.

Arriving at Entebbe International Airport

Entebbe (EBB) sits on the shores of Lake Victoria, about 45 minutes from Kampala. On arrival, present your e-visa approval letter, passport, and yellow fever certificate. Immigration is straightforward and visitors are typically through within 30 to 60 minutes. Zen Safaris guests are met right outside arrivals by our driver-guide with a name board.

Health Requirements & Practical Tips

A yellow fever certificate is mandatory for entry. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended, and most travellers also update routine vaccinations. Carry some US dollars (2013 series or newer) for permits and tips; Ugandan shillings are best for small purchases. ATMs are widely available in Kampala and Entebbe.
