Uganda's Two Dry Seasons
Sitting on the equator, Uganda has two dry seasons: June to August and December to February. These are the most popular months for safari. Trails in Bwindi are firmer, game gathers around water sources, and photography light is superb. Book gorilla permits four to six months ahead for these windows.
The Green Seasons: March to May & September to November
The rains transform Uganda into a lush, emerald landscape. Showers usually fall in short afternoon bursts rather than all-day downpours. Lodges drop their rates, parks are quieter, and migratory birds arrive in huge numbers. Gorilla trekking continues year-round — you just need good boots and a rain jacket.
Best Time for Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking
June to August and December to February offer the easiest trekking conditions in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Kibale. That said, gorilla sightings are essentially guaranteed in any month because trackers locate the families at dawn before your trek begins.
Best Time for Game Drives & Boat Safaris
In the dry months, wildlife in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls concentrates along the Kazinga Channel and the Victoria Nile, making game drives and boat cruises exceptionally productive. Expect elephants, buffalo, hippos, and big cats within short distances of the tracks.
Our Honest Recommendation
If your dates are flexible, aim for June, July, September, or early February — you get dry-season wildlife with fewer crowds than August or Christmas. If you travel in the green season, you will trade a little mud for beautiful light, baby animals, and better prices.
