Birding in Uganda: 1,080 Species and the Mighty Shoebill

With over half of Africa's bird species in one compact country, Uganda is the continent's premier birding destination. Here is where to point your binoculars.

Why Uganda Is Africa's Birding Giant

Uganda packs more than 1,080 recorded bird species — over half of Africa's total — into a country the size of Great Britain. Where the East African savannah meets the Congo Basin rainforest, birders can log 400+ species on a single two-week itinerary.

The Shoebill: Uganda's Holy Grail

The prehistoric-looking shoebill stork, standing 1.5 metres tall with its enormous clog-shaped bill, tops every birder's wish list. The most reliable sites are Mabamba Swamp near Entebbe (a half-day canoe trip), the Nile delta in Murchison Falls, and Lake Albert.

Top Birding Hotspots

Every park has its specials, but these sites anchor a serious birding trip:

  • Mabamba Swamp — shoebill, papyrus gonolek, blue swallow
  • Bwindi's Mubwindi Swamp — 23 Albertine Rift endemics including African green broadbill
  • Queen Elizabeth NP — over 600 species, flamingo-dotted crater lakes
  • Kibale & Bigodi Wetland — great blue turaco and forest hornbills
  • Murchison Falls — Goliath heron, red-throated bee-eater colonies

When to Come & What to Expect

The best birding runs from late May to September, with Palearctic migrants swelling numbers from November to April. Our birding safaris move at birder's pace, with expert local guides who know calls, nests, and stakeouts — non-birding partners still get gorillas and game drives along the way.
